Über diesen Titel

An historical epic adventure novel set in 1861 about the little known history of the famous yacht "America" during the first year of the Civil War. From Annapolis to Charleston, from the courts of England to plantations of Jamaica, fictional hero Lieutenant Jonathon Wade of the Confederate Navy is beset by spier, battered by the guns of Union warships, and beset by the love of two beautiful women.

Here is the dramatic first year of the Civil War at sea, the incredible torching of the Union warships at Norfolk, the battle for Port Royal, the burning of Jacksonville, and the infamous Trent Affair, a secret conspiracy to bring England into the war on the side of the Confederacy. The book, accurate in historical detail, focuses on the moral and ethical dilemma faced by Jonathon Wade is choosing his allegiances to his country or his state, and between the two moan that love him.

From the Author:

"Allegiances" is on one level a historical novel of romance, intrigue, and the sea -- all based around the little-known history of the most famous American yacht - "America" - during the Civil War. But on another level, it is much more.

The yacht, America" and the history of our country are inexplicitedly intertwined. Built in 1851 to represent the best our young country had to offer in the design and construction of sailing ships, the America came to represent the best of our young nation -- and it did so -- besting the British against tremendous odds, winning the 100 Guinea Cup and starting the classic America's Cup race, which has continued as the major international yacht competition for over 150 years.

But, as our country debated the question of allegiance, finally spliting itself in two, so did the yacht, America, which served on both sides of the Civil War - first as an Confederate dispatch carrier and blockade runner, and, then, as a Union Navy blockade vessel.

Her fictional captain, Jonathon Wade, struggles likewise with the question of the moral criteria on which his allegiances should be based -- between his country and his state, and between the two women whom he loves.

This philisophical struggle is one we all must face -- politically and personally -- on what criteria do we give our allegiance?
