Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

This piece sold in 1909 at QuaritchBefore the 1707 Act of Union, the Navigation Acts barred Scottish ships from trading directly with England's American colonies ? tobacco could legally only be shipped to England, on English ships. Scottish merchants got around this by buying tobacco secondhand through English ports, especially Whitehaven, which became a major entrep?t/re-export hub for exactly this purpose.Whitehaven therefore became an important English port in the American tobacco trade. Historical accounts specifically describe early Glasgow merchants using or chartering Whitehaven vessels for the Virginia and Maryland trade. For instance, in 1693?94, thirteen ships loaded by Scottish merchants arrived in Virginia and Maryland, carrying goods outward and loading tobacco for the return voyage. Records for 1695?96 similarly show ships trading between Scotland and the plantations, ?chiefly?bringing tobacco from Virginia and Maryland.?By the year 1700, tobacco had completely taken over the colonial economy. That year alone, Virginia and Maryland shipped roughly 22 million to 38 million pounds of tobacco to England. The Packaging: In 1700, this massive cargo was tightly packed into large wooden barrels called hogsheads to protect the leaf and prevent smuggling.During this period, in homage to the Mayflower of the 1620s, many of the vessels transporting tobacco were named the Mayflower. One of these vessels from the New World, a cargo of leaf tobacco aboard the Mayflower reached Britain in fall 1700. At least some of the tobacco was damaged. Tobacco associated with the Mayflower and additional tobacco purchased at Whitehaven was then being handled at Glasgow.Manuscript, unsigned, in unknown hand, from an account book recording transactions out of Glasgow with new world tobacco.
