Atanazy Raczynski (1788 - 1874) foi um diplomata e aristocrata prussiano, membro da alta aristocracia da Grande Polónia. Enquanto diplomata, visitou países, como Espanha, França, Itália, Suíça, Alemanha, e Portugal, e será durante as suas viagens que começará a publicar trabalhos de história da arte, tal como será em território nacional que se irá interessar pela arte portuguesa, interesse esse que se irá refletir nesta obra, concebida através de 28 cartas, demonstrando habilidade no seu trabalho como recolhedor de feitos, documentos e testemunhos históricos sobre obras e artistas.
