ARNOLD Swimming Against the Tide

The volume honoring Russian mathematician Vladimir Igorevich Arnold (1937-2010) begins with the first full English translation of his 1990 interview in the Russian magazine Kvant and a reprint of his 1997 lecture at the Fields Institute, "From Hilbert's Superposition Problem to Dynamical Systems," Three of his papers follow on polymathematics: whether mathematics is a single science or a set of arts, a mathematical trivium, and about Vladimir Abramovich Rokhlin. Most of the 15 memory articles that follow the bank of photographs were published in two issues of the Notices of American Mathematical Society in 2012, but three are new here.
