THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL THING! (You who know, KNOW!) Large folio, Boards 11 7/16 in. x 9 1.4 in) x 4 in; Textblock 11 in. x 9 in. x 3 3/4 in. Full calf both boards elaborately tooled in blind. Two contrasting black labels to spine, . Seven raised bands (six compartments, each double-ruled in gilt on spine). Moderate rubbing to extremities, particularly at corners, but VERY solidly bound. Past reinforcement to hinges. Marbled edges all around. Previous owner's penciled name and place to front free endpaper: ("Mrs. F. Jones, Ocheco Co. Oregon") Tissue-guarded frontis portrait of Noah Webster, after a painting by F.B. Morse. Tidelines to bottom third of prelims. Another lovely engraving of Noah Webster to half-title page by William Momberger, depicting Webster writing in his study, backed by a full wall of laden bookshelves, and surrounded by piles of open books and strewn papers, including the entire floor. This present revision differs from its predecessors in that it contains an entire revision of the etymologies of Dr. Webster, by a C.A.F. Mahn, of Berlin, Prussia, a scholar specializing in this field. The work took a number of years to complete. Additionally, definitions of principal words were revised, which previously involved defining words "by enumerating and explaining their special application, rather than by developing their broadly-distinguished meanings.". A number of lengthy Introductions to previsous editons have been supplanted with such articles as "A Brief History of the Englilsh Language" by Professor James Hadley; The "Principles of Pronunciation" was revised by Mr. William A. Wheeler. Other extras include: The Scientific and Technical Defintions, The Collection of Synonyms. More than three thousand in-text illustrations as well as a 71-pp "Classified Selection of Pictorial Illustrations" (pp. 1697-1768), arranged topically and in alphabetical order (eg. Agriculture and Horticulture.Botany.Hydraulics.Musical Instruments.Quadrupeds, Races of Man; Stationary and Locomotive Steam Engines; Ancient Alphabets.Muscles of the Human Body, etc. etc., numbering at least 2000 additional illustrations. Also included are Explanatory and Pronouncing Vocabularies (Scripture, Greek and Latin Proper Names, Modern Geographical Names, and Modern Biographical Names); Explanatory Tables of Quotations, Abbreviations, etc. etc. an "Etymological Vocabular of Modern Geographical Names", and a two part Pronouncing Vocabulary of Common English Christian Names, with a separate section for Women's names. 1768 pp. This Dictionary is an invaluable tool -- and I mean when the sunspots hit and the cybers boil up all crispylike, we will be joyful and appreciative to have preserved this massive compendium of useful knowledge. 150 years old now, and ready to serve another 150!
