An ordinary errand became an open homicide file—and decades of records still have not produced a final answer.
On November 7, 1969, Catherine Ann “Cathy” Cesnik was last seen at the Carriage House Apartments in Baltimore. She reportedly planned to visit Edmondson Village Shopping Center. She did not return. Nearly two months later, on January 3, 1970, her body was found in Lansdowne, Baltimore County. The discovery ended the search for a missing woman but opened a homicide investigation that remains unsolved in the public record examined for this book.
After the Errand begins before Catherine became the center of a mystery. It returns to her life as a daughter, sister, Catholic sister, and teacher remembered by former students for her warmth and approachability. It follows her transition from Archbishop Keough High School to Western High School and reconstructs the known circumstances surrounding her final evening without inventing private conversations, warnings, motives, or movements the evidence cannot establish.
The narrative then examines the first missing-person response, the jurisdictional divide between Baltimore City and Baltimore County, the questions surrounding Catherine’s car and reported route, the discovery at Lansdowne, the limited physical evidence, and the investigative years that ended without a defendant. Each stage is approached through the difference between what the public record confirms and what later interpretation has asked it to prove.
Decades after the homicide, a second record formed around the case. Former students described alleged abuse and the power structures surrounding their school environment. Civil litigation, institutional responses, survivor testimony, renewed reporting, documentary attention, and public suspicion changed how many people understood Catherine’s death. Yet those developments did not produce a homicide verdict. After the Errand treats survivor accounts seriously while preserving the essential boundary between testimony, allegation, institutional accountability, investigative interest, and legally established proof.
Later forensic developments brought new attention but not closure. DNA comparisons narrowed certain possibilities without identifying Catherine’s killer. Court proceedings addressed claims and procedural limits without deciding her murder. Missing materials—including complete investigative, medical, forensic, and institutional records—continue to determine how much can responsibly be said about the case.
Structured across five parts and supplemented by a detailed timeline, key-people glossary, and source index, After the Errand offers a disciplined, evidence-aware account of a case shaped as much by incomplete records as by the records that survived. Its tension comes not from sensationalism, but from the distance between public belief and provable fact.
At the center remains Catherine Cesnik: a young woman whose life cannot be reduced to a school, a theory, or an unresolved file. After the Errand examines what an open case can reveal, what it can conceal, and why the absence of a final answer does not erase the obligation to read the evidence carefully.
