In the Style of Falling: Poems - Softcover

Inhaltsangabe

The metaphorical becoming material, the material turning edgewise into (un)canny aliveness: these are the transformations at work in Celeste Goyer's poetry. Goyer's lyrics, laden with aphorism, urgency and mystery-"a long blue note/ found under the sand/ we're running out of sand"-deploy the grammar of dreams, and smart like dialogue from the best hard-boiled detective stories. IN THE STYLE OF FALLING harnesses a Lynchian strangeness toward Goyer's glittering poetic sensorium, a world occupied by "the seed pearls of refusal" where "sour candy powder fills the secret cavities in everything." These are poems made to carry you into the pleasures of the unforeseen, like "an airplane made in / a shape and size all its own / with thresholds folded over and sealed." -Iris Cushing, author of Wyoming; Pierce & Pine: Diane di Prima, Mary Norbert Korte and the Meeting of Matter and Spirit Celeste Goyer's second full length collection IN THE STYLE OF FALLING solidifies her place as a poet of rare imagination and courage. A crash course in the gorgeous restless nonconformity of surrealism, these poems are startling, breathtaking collages with often harrowing, deeply moving imagery. With the deft skills of a fine artist, Goyer never flinches as she mines the kaleidoscope of childhood, adolescence and family-imprints and images collide in uncommon ways, reminding us that memories are only the bits and pieces we each use to create a sense of identity. The poems here are unique, wise, tenderly welcoming the shadows because they arrive flooded with so much light. -Holaday Mason, author of As If Scattered, The Red Bowl & others To read this collection of prose poems is to leap into the teeming waters of dream... Buried cities, hidden entrances, and secret fields beckon, offering up yet also keeping their tantalizing mysteries just beyond our reach. It's a treat to read a female surrealist who maintains such unfettered access to her admirable imagination. -Amy Gerstler, author of Index of Women, Bitter Angel & others
