Designated Hitter: A Major-League Baseball Novel - Softcover

Inhaltsangabe

At forty-seven, Jack thought his best baseball years existed only in his imagination. A lifelong baseball enthusiast, he knew the game inside and out—but nobody expected him to become part of it.

Then cataract surgery changes everything.

Jack discovers that his eyesight isn't merely improved. It has become extraordinary. He can see a baseball with a clarity no ordinary hitter possesses—picking up its rotation, speed, and trajectory almost from the instant it leaves a pitcher's hand. What begins as an astonishing medical curiosity leads to an even more astonishing question:

Could a forty-seven-year-old man actually hit Major League pitching?

Against every expectation, Jack gets his chance with the Seattle Mariners.

What follows is an improbable journey into the heart of Major League Baseball as Jack confronts skeptical players, bewildered coaches, relentless pitchers, the pressures of professional competition—and the physical realities of being decades older than most of his teammates.

But baseball isn't the only complication in Jack's new life. His unexpected fame brings new relationships and a chance at romance, forcing him to discover that seeing a baseball clearly may be considerably easier than seeing what he really wants from life.

As the Mariners chase a championship and Jack pursues records no one imagined possible, he must prove that age doesn't necessarily determine when your greatest opportunity will arrive.

Sometimes life saves its best pitch for the bottom of the ninth.

Designated Hitter: A Major-League Baseball Novel is a warm, humorous and imaginative story about baseball, second chances, love, and what can happen when an ordinary person is given one extraordinary gift.
