Where Newton Ends
The Acceleration That Links Galaxies to the Cosmos

Follow the stars outward in a spiral galaxy, past the glow, into the thin disk where light almost fades — and they are still moving. Moving too fast. By the only law we trusted for three centuries, they should long since have drifted away.

That much has been known since the 1970s. It is the headline of the dark-matter problem, and the headline hides the more interesting fact.

The discrepancy does not switch on at a fixed distance from a galaxy's center, or at a fixed mass. It switches on at a fixed acceleration — about 1.2 × 10⁻¹⁰ metres per second squared, roughly the speed a snail might gain in a year of patient effort. Giant spirals and faint dwarfs, gas-rich disks and bulge-heavy ones: all turn at the same threshold. And that threshold is suspiciously close to a number built from the universe itself — the speed of light times the expansion rate.

Nobody knows why.

Where Newton Ends is a map of that open problem. It lays four serious research programs side by side — inertia from the cosmos, a gravitating medium, horizons and entropy, a shared cosmic transition — and for each one shows exactly where it reaches and exactly where it stops. It does not stitch them together, because the stitching is the thing not yet earned. Every claim carries a tag: FACT for what is established, OPEN for what is genuinely unsolved, PICTURE for a metaphor that illuminates without deriving.

The book closes on the two measurements that could break the tie, and on the firm ground that remains on either side of the wall.

Written for the reader who wants the real state of an unfinished question, with the establishment credited in full and the author's own contributions clearly fenced. Includes two research papers as appendices and the archived record of a nine-paper preregistered computational campaign.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

John Maggio is an independent researcher and author working in analytic number theory, computational physics, and cosmology. He publishes through Efficient Intelligence, LLC, and is the author of The Primes Trilogy. His work is conducted under a preregistration discipline - predictions locked and hashed before they are scored - and archived under ORCID 0009-0000-0669-9762.
