Seventeen-year-old Sabrina has always felt at home in her body-until the world around her starts telling a different story. In 1990s Los Angeles, everybody seems to have an opinion: boys, classmates, family, friends, and trusted adults. About her body. About her hair. About what makes a Black girl beautiful, desirable, respectable, or too much. Sabrina and her friends are pulled into a world of diets, beauty rules, first crushes, public humiliation, and the impossible demand to be thick enough to be wanted, but thin enough to be approved. Set against the bright heat of L.A., THICK AND THIN is a sharp, heartfelt coming-of-age memoir about friendship, Black girlhood, body image, hair, hunger, and the struggle to hold on to yourself when everyone has an idea of who you should become.
