My wife and I just completed a 158-day do-it-yourself world cruise. We sailed part of the way on the 2026 World Cruise of Silversea's Silver Dawn; part of the way on the 2026 World Cruise of the Crystal Serenity; and part of the way on the 2026 World Cruise of Regent's Seven Seas Mariner. During our travels, I wrote a book about why we did this, and a day-by-day account of our experiences. This book - originally intended to be a narrative memoir offering practical suggestions for those considering a luxury world cruise - relates the many mid-course changes we were forced to make because of the Mideast war. These include our at-times nerve-racking adventures in the Strait of Hormuz, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, where we were taken into custody while trying to photograph the aftermath of a drone strike.
