Land of the Mourning tells the story of a coming of age under the oppressive conditions of life in the slums of Tondo. The story is framed by a series of love letters between two youths over the course of a year of forbidden love. Set in Manila during the 1960s, the story unfolds to reveal not only young Mandy’s struggle to find himself and overcome poverty, but also to lay bare aspects of Philippine society viewed through the eyes of a slum dweller.
