Inhaltsangabe

A Dust Bowl mother’s fight for survival. A daughter’s unbreakable spirit. A journey that refuses to surrender to despair.

Unbroken Hope sweeps readers from the parched plains of 1937 Oklahoma to the promise—and heartbreak—of California, following Erma and her young daughter, Barbara as they chase a future beyond dust, hunger, and abandonment. Erma sets out to find Clay, the man who left her behind. Alone and penniless, she leans on the unexpected kindness of strangers and claws her way toward stability.

Just as the world edges toward war, love finds her again in Vince—a gentle man who brings light back into her life. But when he goes off to Europe, the mother and daughter find themselves alone once again. Through every hardship, Erma and Barbara learn to survive not by forgetting the past, but by pushing forward when the world offers no mercy.

Powerful, heart‑wrenching, and ultimately uplifting, Unbroken Hope is a testament to resilience across generations—proof that even in the darkest times, the human spirit can rise, rebuild, and begin again.

Kirkus Reviews - "Get It."

Wells' fictionalized biography of his mother stretches from her life in the Oklahoma Dust Bowl to late-century Southern California.

Any book that treats the Okie experience does so in the shadow of the master, John Steinbeck, which is not a knock on Wells. In fact, he takes a page from the master in that he begins many chapters with moving set pieces (think of Steinbeck's famous tortoise crossing Route 66). Chapter 5 begins, "US Route 66 was the ant trail to the picnic blanket," and then he works that metaphor wonderfully. Readers will look forward to these moving sections, many of which read like prose poetry. And when things look bleak, a good person always shows up to bolster one's faith, like Fred Barley, the compassionate train boss who buys Erma and Barbara breakfast and a bus ticket.

A warm and lovingly written tribute to a special mom."
