Uprooted from a comfortable, spoiled lifestyle in a middle-class, sports crazy suburban community, John Newlin recounts the culture shock of living in a Roman Catholic monastery boarding school in the late 1950s and early 1960s. From a Friday Night Lights kind of experience, the writer was immersed in an ascetic, strict, no-frills way of life, and he found making the adjustment more challenging that he ever could have imagined. His new culture featured hours on end in church, six days of classes, long homework sessions, all garnished with a dose of hazing. This memoir traces how he attempted to deal with challenges his new life presented, with varying degrees of success.
