A Pre-October 7 Story
Even After Everything is a powerful nonfiction work that chronicles the extraordinary life of Gadi Yarkoni—a man whose love for his Gaza-border community endured despite devastating personal tragedy.
In 2014, during the final hour of Operation Protective Edge, Israel’s war with the terrorists of hamas, Yarkoni’s life was irrevocably altered when a mortar explosion killed two of his closest friends and rendered him a double amputee. Hospitalized for six months, navigating unimaginable physical pain and attempting to reconcile both his own and his community’s immeasurable losses, Yarkoni did not allow tragedy to define his future. He slowly learned to walk again, and from his bed in the rehab ward, took the bold decision to run for mayor, determined to rebuild not only his own life but the lives of those around him. Years later, in the aftermath of October 7, his unfathomable resilience gave him the strength to lead Eshkol Regional Council, the community that suffered the greatest losses, with courage, determination, and hope.
Even After Everything sheds light on kibbutz life and how the socialist values instilled in him as a child continue to guide Gadi to this day. The book examines Yarkoni’s lifelong challenges, both educational and medical, and his steely resolve to "set targets” and achieve.
Through extensive interviews and years of research, Fischer presents a deeply human portrait of a leader guided by humility, optimism, and a philosophy of forward movement—never looking back even when the path ahead is exceedingly difficult. The narrative weaves the concepts of resilience and determination in the face of relentless adversity with broader themes, including shifting family dynamics, giving back, the power of women, leadership under fire, radical hope, and the ability to continue believing that life is “99% heaven.”
Even After Everything is not a political book, but a profoundly Jewish one—rooted in values of responsibility, community, and dreams for a better future. It speaks to anyone seeking inspiration in difficult times, no matter their background, and offers a rare, intimate glimpse into life on Israel’s border with Gaza before the events of October 7. Readers will be inspired by Gadi’s post-traumatic optimism, and might even find themselves frequently asking, when faced with challenges of their own, “WWGD?” (What would Gadi do?)
