I wrote these poems asking myself–what truth could I learn from trees. There is a feeling when you go into nature, that connection, that sense of belonging, that seems to arise from the songs of the birds, from the insects, from the wind and leaves. This feeling is intrinsic to being human, evolving from our origin in nature. We can no longer hear our own selves, our own desires, or each other. We feel disconnected. Our inner nature grows less and less natural. The song of the forest unheard. These poems reminders to listen.

Based in San Diego, Brian Meyer is a plein air poet and painter in jazz known for creating on the spot at local concerts and clubs. His words and art come from these moments; a practice based on jazz improvisation, developing chops outside of comfort zones, always asking; does this swing? Brian is also a US Army Veteran, having served as a combat signaler for 16th Corps Support Group during Desert Storm.
