Every business owner on the planet would love to have a wildly efficient operation. Besides the obvious benefits of high productivity, product/service quality, and customer satisfaction, efficiency also improves employee retention and engagement and eliminates key business risks. It also sets you—the owner—free from the time drain of day-to-day business operations so you can focus on business growth. And perhaps the most important benefit of having an efficient operation is that it can dramatically improve business value and your owner freedom.

You heard that right: an efficient operation drives value and opens the door to your autonomy. Of course, operational efficiency is only a part of the equation. But it’s an important one—and one you have the ability to impact directly, now.
Operational efficiency is about defining the critical processes in your business. It’s about documenting those processes—even (and perhaps especially) those that exist today only in your head—to ensure everyone on your team completes key tasks the same way, driving consistency, accuracy, and replicability. It’s about using those processes relentlessly to train current team members and new hires alike, getting everyone quickly to an aligned, productive, and efficient performance state.

An efficient business is also a business that is easier to sell, if that is part of your roadmap. (And let’s face it—every business will eventually transition). Put another way, owner dependency is one of the biggest roadblocks to selling a business. A business with results that are largely dependent on the existing individual owner is worth dramatically less than one that has, for all intents and purposes, an absentee owner. (If you don’t know if your business has an owner dependency issue, just ask yourself this question: What would happen to my business and my family if something happened to me? For most owners, what would happen would be tragic.) As long as your knowledge is the most important intangible asset of your business, the business’s value will be dramatically less without you. Even if you are able to sell, you will have to stay on board much longer post-transaction to successfully transfer the depth and breadth of your proprietary knowledge to the new owner. And most of us who sell are planning to slip into a smooth retirement or jump into a new business venture as soon as possible.

In short, it pays to reduce your business’s dependency on you now, improving sustainability and value all at once. And operational efficiency is the path to dependency elimination, scalability, and improved succession planning. Once you achieve true efficiency, you can, and should, delegate as much as possible in order to fully remove any dependencies that remain.

If you’re like most business owners, you’ve always dreamed of having an efficient and valuable business—and this book gives you a great place to start. In the pages that follow, you’ll learn an immediately actionable process and system for turning your business into that efficient and valuable operation you’ve been dreaming of.
