In her memoir, Becoming Independent, the author takes readers on a remarkable journey through her life, one deeply rooted in the rich landscapes and traditions of East Tennessee. Growing up on a farm, she developed a strong work ethic influenced by family, church, and the 4-H Club. She dreamed of going to college. Despite her aspirations, the path to a college education proved arduous, spanning 16 years to earn a bachelor’s degree.
Her story weaves through the challenges of balancing personal life with academic pursuits, navigating starts and stops in her college journey, and seizing job opportunities along the way. Through perseverance and resilience, she ultimately achieves her goal, emerging as the first woman to be awarded a PhD in Agricultural Economics from the University of Tennessee.
She joined the Association of University Women (AAUW) and became a strong advocate for women and girls.
Throughout her narrative, the author reflects on the enduring presence of her church, highlighting its role as a source of guidance, solace, and community, amidst life’s trials and triumphs.
