Darby Littleton is a literary biographer, who usually writes about famous authors, such as Charles Dickens and Mark Twain. But when she is asked to write a biography about Angela Ashton, a living novelist who became successful later in life, Darby enters unknown territory. For one thing, there are gaps in Angela's history that Darby has to dig to uncover. For another, Angela herelf cannot offer much assistance; she has been committed to care, suffering from early-onset dementia. But the more Darby digs, the murkier the truth becomes. Angela's dementia may be due to foul play. And, the source of that foul play may well be the Russians, who have played an outsized role in Angela's life. As the months wear on and Darby learns more of the truth, she realizes the Russians don't want Angela's story told. And that Darby herself is in danger.
