“JOHN BALLENDINE: Early Developers of Potomac River By-Pass Canals and Developments on the Occoquan and James Rivers” by David McIntosh and Don Peterson. 2022. Hard cover. 127 pages. The book describes Ballendine’s accomplishments, including construction of his by-pass canals at Seneca Falls in Virginia and at Little Falls in Maryland in the 1700s, which reduced loss of boat cargoes and saved lives. The book includes many black and white and color pictures, maps, and drawings. Remnants of his works are still visible today, including portions of Ballendine’s two by-pass canals, a flume across the Donald Trump Golf Course, his mills, homes, and other structures. MANY NEW DISCOVERIES HAVE BEEN MADE SUPPORTED BY A PROFUSION OF REFERENCES. No books and only a few articles have been written about Ballendine’s historic accomplishments. Ballendine’s works significantly increased agriculture in Virginia and Maryland, and inspired the future development of the C&O Canal.
