Kevin Olmsted’s road to hell started when his 14-year-old daughter and best friend, M, dropped 30 pounds in 60 days and disappeared from their family’s reality. He knew nothing about anorexia, and had no one to turn to for help, guidance, or support. He and his wife went from hospital visits to residential care facilities to outpatient programs. Kevin turned his life inside out. He left his 23-year wine career to stay home full time and teach his daughter to eat again. Over the time he was hunkered down in treatment for M, he faced every battle and terror that anorexia can throw at a child’s family. Kevin repeatedly picked himself up off the mat, regrouped his courage, and kept coming back to help and love the teenage girl who desperately needed him. Scared Dad Feeding is a call to arms for other parents in this community to open their eyes and ears to the reality of eating disorders. It begs parents to have the courage to take on the fight of their lives, because eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental disorder. Scared Dad Feeding is part cathartic memoir of a horrific life with a mental disorder, and part field guide for how parents can find a path through the darkness of hell that is anorexia.
