Facsimile of the 1907 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Harrison, East Newark and Kearny, New Jersey, reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers all three Hudson County towns across the Passaic River from Newark, a combined population of 30,000: the factories and streets of Harrison, the thread mills of East Newark, and Kearny from Passaic Avenue and the river up Kearny Avenue and Belgrove Drive to Arlington, with the stock yards, railroad shops and works out on the Kearny Meadows toward the Hackensack River.
The seventy-six numbered sheets work block by block from the stores, halls and houses along Harrison Avenue, Central Avenue, Kearny Avenue, Schuyler Avenue and Belgrove Drive - the Harrison City Hall, the Record Building, the Kearny Town Hall, the Free Public Library, the Arlington Hotel, the Security Storage Warehouse and the fire stations of each town - through the Pennsylvania Railroad Harrison station, freight house and Meadow Shops, the Lackawanna Harrison station and coal pockets, the Erie Arlington station, the Crucible Steel Company of America, the Henry R. Worthington hydraulic works, the Hyatt Roller Bearing Company, the General Electric Company, the Driver-Harris Wire Company, the Marine Engine and Machine Company, the Clark Thread Company and Clark Mile End Spool Cotton mills at East Newark, Marshall & Co.'s linen thread and twine mill, the Nairn Linoleum Company, the Stewart Hartshorn shade-roller factory, the Arlington Company's pyralin works, the Kearny Hat Works, the Globe Wire and Federal Wire Cloth companies, the Webb Folding Box Company, the Hauck brewery, the Shriver, Reuther and Hewitt foundries, the Hartung and Passaic River boiler works, the Otto Coke Company and the Public Service gas holders and car barns, the McClave, Walker and Snyder lumber yards, Swift & Company's Harrison branch, the Bimbler & Van Wagenen slaughter houses and the Newark Stock Yard, and the Newark Sanitary Reduction, Vatcky fertilizer and National Metallurgic works on the Morris Canal and the Hackensack River, to the New Jersey Home for Disabled Soldiers, St. Anthony's Orphan Asylum, the Sisters of Charity Italian Protectory, the Sacred Heart Industrial School, the Harrison, East Newark and eight Kearny public schools, Holy Cross, St. Anthony's, St. Cecilia's and St. Stephan's Catholic churches, Christ Church, Trinity Episcopal, Knox and First Presbyterian, the Baptist, Methodist and Swedish churches and the Cleveland Avenue synagogue, the Arlington Country Club and greenhouses, and the residential streets of all three towns - with the added 1918 sheet of the Riverside Steel Casting and Egyptian Lacquer works and the U. S. Engineering Department depots on Passaic Avenue.
In 1907 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Harrison, East Newark and Kearny for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the three towns at fifty feet to the inch, the Nairn linoleum works and the streets beside it at sixty feet to the inch, and the Harrison river front at one hundred feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city.
This Exile Books edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: the combined title and index sheet, the key map with the fire and water report and all seventy-six numbered map sheets, 1 to 76, together with sheet 85, a new sheet added in January 1918, printed at 8.5 x 11 inches on premium color paper. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Harrison, East Newark and Kearny address back to 1907.

The Sanborn Map Company of New York, founded by D. A. Sanborn in 1867 and by the 1900s headquartered at 11 Broadway, surveyed thousands of American cities for the fire-insurance trade. Its large-scale plans record every building's footprint, construction, height and use, and remain the most detailed record of the early twentieth-century American city.
