Set in a rural community in the early 20th century, Red and Monk revolves around the lives of Sarah, Russ, their families, and the connections they form together and within their community.

Sarah, a young woman yearning for a life beyond the farm, works in a mill. She reflects on her strict upbringing, limited education, and dreams of a better future. The tragic death of her brother in a car accident deeply impacts her and her family.

Russ, a hardworking young man, leaves school to support his family's farm. As his father's health deteriorates, he assumes greater responsibility. Responsible and kind, Russ eventually forms a connection with Sarah.

Pastoral and complex, Red and Monk also highlights various community events and introduces colorful characters, such as accident-prone Reverend Zane Norton and outspoken Burton Puett. The story of Sarah, Russ, and a network of surrounding characters explores themes of family, duty, loss, and self-discovery, all while portraying the simplicity of rural life, customs, and the significance of community support.
