From a small village in Africa to the terror of a refugee camp massacre, this is the true story of a man who faced unimaginable hardship and still found a way to build a new life.
Fidele Sebahizi’s journey is one of survival, loss, courage, and determination. Forced to endure violence, displacement, and uncertainty, he could have allowed the past to define him. Instead, he kept moving forward, one difficult step at a time.
His path eventually led him to the United States, where he started again from almost nothing. Through hard work and persistence, he built a meaningful life, became a police officer, continued his education, and earned a PhD.
This memoir is not only about surviving painful experiences. It is about finding the strength to keep going when life feels impossible. It is about refusing to give up, learning from hardship, and believing that a better future can still be created after everything has fallen apart.
Emotional, honest, and deeply inspiring, this story shows that our beginnings do not have to decide our future. Even after great loss, it is possible to rise, rebuild, and create a life filled with purpose.

Dr. Fidele Sebahizi grew up in a poor African village, living and surviving an ethnically- motivated massacre in a United Nations refugee camp of Gatumba in Burundi, Africa. Fidele overcame life obstacles as an immigrant in the United States to achieve the American dream. He became the first immigrant to join and work for the Abilene Police Department in Texas as a police officer and the first member of his ethnic group, the Banyamulenge, in the United States to serve the American community in such a capacity. While working for the APD, Fidele earned multiple degrees: a B.A. in Creative Writing from Southern New Hampshire University in New Hampshire, an M.S. in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University in Texas, and a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice-Homeland Security from Liberty University in Virginia. A father and a husband, Fidele likes to listen to country music during his free time.
