Over the years, thousands of steelworkers travelled down Rockingham Road, ‘Rocky Road’, to begin their shift in Corby Steelworks. The entry point being through what was called the West Gate, in full view of the intimidating Blast Furnaces running paralell to the main London to Edinburgh railway line. The route disappeared with the Beeching Act in 1963 but the tracks remain to this day.
With the steel closure in 1980 and the subsequent demolition of what was once described as the biggest steel complex in Europe, the area was eventually resurrected with an ‘out of town’ shopping precinct called the Phoenix Parkway, which gave us the inspiration for the title of this book, 'Rocky Road - By the Time I Get to Phoenix'.
