Kapparot is a Jewish ritual that is performed on the eve of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. The word kapparot means “atonements” and refers to the act of transferring one’s sins and misdeeds to a symbolic object, usually a chicken or money. The ritual involves waving the chicken or money over one’s head three times while reciting a prayer that expresses the wish to be forgiven and spared from a harsh decree. The chicken is then slaughtered and donated to the poor, or the money is given to charity. The ritual is based on the belief that one can achieve atonement by giving something of value to those in need.

Kaporos; also spelled kapparot, or kappores, kapporois is a customary atonement ritual.
Kaporos has been practiced by many Jews around the world, especially by Orthodox and Hasidic communities. However, it has also faced criticism and opposition from some rabbis and animal rights activists. Some rabbis have argued that kaporos is a superstitious and irrational custom that has no basis in Jewish law or tradition. They have suggested that money should be used instead of chickens, or that the ritual should be abolished altogether. Some animal rights activists have protested against the cruelty and waste involved in killing thousands of chickens for kapparot. They have advocated for alternative ways of expressing compassion and generosity, such as veganism and social justice.

Photographing rituals exposes me to different cultures, religions and traditions. I tried to document this ritual in Brooklyn , New York up untill the Covid pandemie started.
