Why were we created, man and woman, and what implications does this have on understanding the self, the other, and the meaning of existence? According to Plato, man and woman were once created as one and were divided by the wrath of Zeus. Separated as one being, the two unite to re-unite their nature, “each of us is like the symbol of a man, a half looking for the other half, for its corresponding symbol.” Deep within himself, man senses the call to know himself to be able to live accordingly. The fundamental question in life is, ‘Why? What is the purpose of living?’ leads man on this search. The man or woman who suppresses this question becomes lost in the labyrinth of life and begins to relate to him/herself and to others as a ‘given.’ Man and woman, through their union, reveal to each other the ultimate meaning of their bodies. Enclosed within it is the transcendence that each promises the other.
