Hunter’s Mark, A Novella, Prequel to the Chronicles of Borea – A Grand Epic Sword and Sorcery Fantasy, by Joseph E Koob II
Dark figures and an evil premonition haunt two half-elven lads on their way home from a successful hunting expedition in the Borean North Country. When bandits attack a party of villagers returning from a trapping expedition, the brothers charge in to help fight off the attackers. Though well-trained in weaponry and the arts of war, the boys now carry the heavy weight of the immediacy and horror of human death as they continue their trek.
A chance meeting with an acolyte of the rites of Gaia, the Earth Mother, brings them some understanding of their actions, though an aura of darkness continues to overshadow their trip home. As night envelopes the death site, a shadowy figure exploring the bodies begins to give shape to the evil following them – one who understands the power of the “Hunter’s Mark.”
The Hunt
“An extra sense, long practiced, often tells him that something near might actually be able to do him harm. Another stop, wait, sharply alert with all his senses – then a step, and another, checking again. Softly moving on pine needles, avoiding the scattered leaves of the hardwoods that would surely give him away, his body flows gracefully. Stopping, checking again. Making sure. Another step.”
The Hunted
“Something didn’t feel right, and it was not the first time on this hunt that his heightened sense of warning had peaked.”
Black Priest
“A shadow deeper than the night emerged from the ditch. Rising like a wraith, the black-robed figure slid as quietly as death itself along the surface, searching, stopping… stooping low…”
The Chronicles of Borea is a sweeping fantasy with intriguing plot twists interwoven in a moving fabric of a sensual and powerful writing style. A tale in the true sense of the word -- fun to read and captivating from one book to the next. This Prequel to the series offers the new reader, or those who have already read some of the books of the series, a better understanding of the powers at play and the characters striving to save the very life of the Borean World. "A powerful lead-in story that grips the reader from the start."
