‘In Sentimental Mood’ looks back on Robert Eshelby’s life as a chorus member, on tour, singing Gilbert and Sullivan opera with the celebrated D’Oyly Carte Opera Company. It is illustrated by D’Oyly Carte principal tenor, the late Geoffrey Shovelton, and by Ruth Eshelby.

The book includes Robert’s early determination to become a singer, and how, finally he sings professionally, with Queensland Opera before moving back to the United Kingdom and auditioning for the D’Oyly Carte. The journey has been hard and long.

It is illuminated by more than twenty comic poems, written by Robert about life on tour with D’Oyly Carte and his work with other operatic groups.

Robert makes us laugh at the hardships of life on tour through his verse, but he doesn’t mince words about some aspects of his journey and has wise advice about singing opera in an opera chorus.
