This book is about my business and personal life and everything I have learned.

My life can be divided into three phases across my business and personal life. I was born in Dudley, Birmingham, on 29th October 1961 to Malcolm and Margaret Higgins. I had a humble start, but there was a grain of ambition there from my mother that has stood me in good stead throughout my life. As you will learn, I was quickly forced to be independent, yet she was always there supporting me and encouraging me. I didn’t really have a plan, and I wasn’t always confident, but my confidence and eventual success grew from small things.

I was lucky to get my first electrical engineering job, but I also worked hard. I held down a full-time job while I developed my first business. In a way, it was filling long hours on call. Selling the business was also not part of a big plan, but it was serendipitous.

The second phase saw me climb the corporate ladder and really get to grips with the people and the data of electrical engineering. I then used this knowledge to establish my second business. I couldn’t sell this business when I wanted, so I took a step back and set up an import business in Corfu, with a string of shops and bars across the island. As you will
learn, my personal life really took off at this time.

Towards the end of my time on the island, I met the wonderful Wendy, who became the mother to my brilliant children and remains a good friend. When Wendy became pregnant, I realised I couldn’t stay in Corfu forever, so back in the UK, I started a different kind of business outside of electrical engineering; it went wrong when the bank pulled my line of credit. This was the end of the second phase of my life. I was in bed for several days, really depressed. Somehow, I scraped the energy together to carry on.

I returned to Corfu, but this time, it was different. I had a young family. I also didn’t want to chuck it all in – to set them
a good example – and because of my mum and everything that had gone before, I knew I could do it. Eventually, I returned to the UK to found my current business, Coeval. Teaming up with old colleagues felt great, and the business has been good. I want to sell Coeval to have another adventure, but this time, it will be different again. Maybe in Capri, maybe on Corfu again – who knows?

As I reflect, it has been a rollercoaster with much success to toast, but really, it’s a story of resilience and love. I have
a lot of love in my life and a lot of friendship. There are people I cherish, and I want to acknowledge how much they
mean to me and their really significant role in getting me to where I am now and helping me through the effects of long
COVID, which has taken the edge off my enjoyment of life for now.

This book is dedicated to Abigail, Alana, Alistair and Leah – you are the future. With special thanks to Wendy and my
mum, Margaret.
