Raymond Tomkinson suggests that everyday faith is nurtured by prayer. He begins by asking: 'What is prayer?' As he unfolds his own understanding of it he asserts that it is the dynamic of our relationship with God. As such, it exists not only when we consciously pray but at every moment of every day. However, the author is aware that there are many things which keep us from conscious prayer except, perhaps, at Sunday worship. In the first part of the book he takes the reader to a different day of the week and sets his ideas about prayer around everyday life and faith. Further, and in the ancient Christian tradition of the Canonical Hours, he offers suggestions for prayer at a number of points during a typical day. He illustrates these prayer times by introducing the reader to seven characters, all of whom experience the challenges and privileges of making time to pray. Towards the end of the book the author offers further reflections on different traditions in prayer.
