The Riddle of the Sands by Erskine Childers is one of the most popular espionage novels of all time. It is one of the first spy novels written and has been made into both cinema and television. The Riddle of the Sands came a few years before World War I and was extremely popular among teenagers, young adults as well as adults.

Often described as the first Modern Thriller, the novel starts with Carruthers, who is a minor official in the Foreign office. Davies, one of the friends of Carruthers, asks him to take a yachting holiday in the Baltic Sea with him. Carruthers, heartbroken over a recent breakup, agrees to go on the holiday along with Davies.

Davies is hiding the fact that he does not have a comfortable yacht, but instead, a small sailing boat. Although this is a minor shock to Carruthers, he agrees to go on the trip anyway. Soon, Davies informs Carruthers that he suspects the Germans are planning something sinister.

Davies is in love with the daughter of the boat’s owner, a German. Caught between his love and patriotism towards the country, Davies decides to investigate and find out what the Germans are up to.
