Patrick Wise was born on his family’s Oxfordshire farm in the middle of World War 2, and one of his earliest memories is of the night army paratroopers crash-landed on the roof, having missed their target during a training exercise. Otherwise, his early years could scarcely have been more peaceful; protected from the realities of the war by his parents, Patrick spent his early years in blissful rural peace playing and helping on the farm. Life became much less carefree later, when the family were forced to leave the farm and find employment, but Patrick’s gentle philosophy and love of music helped to see him through. This thoughtful and charming memoir evokes the innocence of the post-war years in a more peaceful and less troubled rural England.
