“Why did the U.S. fail in Vietnam? Was it the boots on the ground? NO!... It was the soft shoes on the carpets in Washington that lost the war.” This observation about the Vietnam War was written by Manfred (Max) Rotermund, thinker, writer, and passionate follower of the news. Max particularly enjoyed reading The New York Times every day, and, between 2013 and 2018, he wrote hundreds of comments responding to NYTarticles that were published in the online edition.
Max’s contributions were not the typical online comments one sees every day. He expressed himself in an exceptionally articulate and insightful way, making unexpected connections between events, both current and historical. His statements were sometimes personal and always pithy and powerful, grounded in his own philosophy of freedom, knowledge, and democracy. This book is a compilation of Max’s comments and essays, published with the hope that the reader will appreciate and enjoy Max’s distinctive views.
The last chapter of the book features more of Max’s original thinking but in the form of recipes for some of his most interesting meals. What better way to honor Max than recreate one of his trademark dishes? Although not as unusual, a few recipes by his wife Susan Dawson and even one by his mother, Elisabeth Rotermund, are included. What the comments, essays, and recipes have in common is Max’s unique way of looking at everything from the world to the contents of his cupboard.
