In our history, melody is the great absentee in musical theory books, always confined to the background. Yet, it is the central element in most musical experiences: the first that sticks to the listener’s memory and the one that most of all connotates the identity of a song. Through the use of a great number of examples – many of which are quite new in a theory book – this text traces a path towards the discovery of the different melodic typologies and the power of melody, meant as a narration of emotions. It also provides a series of ideas aimed to be an inspiration for those who want to make their own melodies more interesting, and a call for a new compositive perspective based on the melody. In the appendix, a set of exercises will allow the reader to test his or her understanding of the proposed method of analysis.
