This book is an invitation to collaborate in a revolution in how we develop young people. Written by its founder, it tells the story of We Rise, an award winning Brixton based social enterprise that is tackling social disadvantage by spearheading a revolution in work experience.
Work experience and professional contacts are crucial to future success, yet they depend on social connections that many young people do not have. In addition, while the world of work has changed radically but our model of work experience has not.
We Rise has developed a model work experience that is fit for the 21st century not the 19th. Informed by extensive experience and research, We Rise's ethos is that we can best prepare young people by inviting them into the world and getting them involved in creating it. The success of this model developed by We Rise is proof that this is an idea that can continue to grow and be adapted by others.
Summary of contents
Chapter 1 describes the community We Rise grew out of, Brixton in South London. Brixton encapsulates the opportunities, challenges and contradictions of this fast changing world.
Chapter 2 explores the future of work. While we might not know what the jobs of the future will be, we can see clear trends. Work is increasingly becoming freelance, flexible and team based, even within organisations. Imagination, play and creativity are more valued. Everyone will have to learn continuously and be able to collaborate, connect and communicate. Being able to assemble networks of support will be vital to maintaining mental health and wellbeing. Self management and strong values will be crucial to working well in teams. Empathy and cultural awareness will enable effective team work when people have different attitudes, experiences and backgrounds.
Chapter 3 explores the world as it currently is for our kids and shows how our current institutions do not equip them with what they need for a successful future. While the world of work is changing fast, our education system is not and the impact of this growing gap falls disproportionally on those from disadvantaged backgrounds. By maintaining old fashioned systems of control, a narrow knowledge based curriculum and a focus on high stakes exams, schools lack the time or capacity to develop the talents of individuals and nurture the attitudes, attributes and behaviours young people will need to thrive.
Chapter 4 explains the approach being developed by We Rise. It explores what has been learnt through working with young people and the development of a new approach to work experience that makes it relevant for the 21st century. We Rise focuses on connecting teenagers to the world outside school and coaching them to learn the skills they will need through experience of doing real work in projects. It shows how this offers a new way of involving young people in creating real world value and a positive way to empower and support young people to explore their future.
Chapter 5 sets out an invitation to collaborate in embedding real world learning, hands on experience and collaborative value creation in our companies, communities and networks. It proposes a shared approach to support young people to become the creators, inventors and entrepreneurs of the future.
