Like to reminisce? Like to laugh?

Author Barbara Lockard shares anecdotes about growing up, lower middle class, on the west side of Cincinnati, Ohio. Readers have the vicarious experience of learning Baltimore Catechism from the nuns at St. Catharine Elementary; having an older sister call you "Chicken," because you wouldn't ride your bike down the infamous White Street hill, and getting a bad, $2 haircut from the Beauty Academy.

The author's first book, "Chapel Veils, Cough Drops and Queen for a Day," has been popular among Cincinnati residents, as well as others who came of age in the era of Duncan Yo-Yo's and Khrushchev. This book continues the storytelling and is recommended for anyone wanting a mood lift and brief visits to their own pasts.

Although the material is lighthearted, it addresses philosophical issues, such as encouraging independence in children, kids playing a productive role in family life, parenting then and now, and religious education. Grandparents will appreciate Lockard's comparisons of her childhood with that of her grandchildren.
