Letters to His Son on the Art of Becoming a Man of the World and a Gentleman was written by Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield to his illegitimate son, (also called Philip Stanhope). First published in 1774, the book consists of more than 400 letters, spanning a thirty year period. Beginning in 1737 and ending with the death of his son in 1768, Chesterfield's letters are mostly instructive - discussing things like the conduct of life, and manners, as well as more specific subjects such as geography, history, and classical literature.
