Nurseries and garden centres remaining open during lockdown turned our attention to the green spaces we control, be that the small pocket handkerchief out the front, visible to the increased numbers of exercising passers-by, or the adornment of plants on a balcony or the house plants given a little more TLC during prolonged periods indoors.

This is not just another gardening book, but looks at why we choose the plants we do to recollect past events, recall a memorable or perhaps defining moment in our lives or relive a story which makes us smile. Hyacinths are always a popular gift at this time of year, heralding Spring and embodying the hopes of all good wishes, often the dominant plant in a 'friends' garden'.

In this second Cuz Collection of words and images, I wanted to capture this gardener's reasons for his choices, which prompt stories to return as each one takes its turn to flower or fruit. A green space, however small, defines us and allows us to breathe.
