Inhaltsangabe

Unfettered Soul is an anthology: a literary work utilizing poetry and short stories to provide snippets into the lives and culture of a people. Though the culturally specific experiences can be contextualized to a youthful man growing up in the western part of Kenya, the poems are cross-culturally neutral and will be relatable to all readers from all the continents.

The first section (pages 6 – 58) consists of poems. And in this section, the author shares most of the experiences in the “first person”, drawing us to see and feel alongside him through the pages. He has also utilized poetry to introduces philosophical discourses on subjects that have pre-occupied the mind of critical thinkers in the contemporary age. The reader will be challenged to think over why somethings are what they are and why they might have taken decisions that they took without thinking twice.

In the section on short stories, the author introduces characters who allow the reader to see the world through their “cultural prism”. In “the Village Vagabond” for instance, the author introduces Dunia, a man who has nothing to lose, literally, to help us prod subjects that decorum will not allow a normal member of the community to discuss.

This book was written for those who enjoy literature for the sake of it: a good story, good grammatical flow, and characters who take us along in a shared experience of their lives. It helps us open our minds to other people’s views and shades light on the cultural inhibitions of “the other person” in our interactions.

This is a good read for anyone interested in understanding the cultural underpinnings of the customs and behaviour of a people in rural Kenya/East Africa, and I recommend it for anyone seeking to expand his/her her cultural experiences through books.
