The tomb of St. Olav in Nidaros (former name of Trondheim) was in the Middle Ages the fourth most important pilgrimage in Christendom after Jerusalem, Rome and Santiago de Compostela. However, in the 16th century, when Luther's ideas supplanted the Catholic religion in Norway, the pilgrimage to the tomb of St. Olav was considered to be contrary to the values taught by the Reformist religion. This pilgrimage route was then forgotten for more than four centuries. In 1997, the Norwegian city of Trondheim celebrated its millennium. On this occasion, the old Nidaros pilgrimage route was reopened. It is 643 km long and crosses Norway from south to north. It would have been incomprehensible to write a book about my long hike on the Way of St. Olav without mentioning the Vikings, as the history of the Norwegians is so closely linked to this ancient civilization. Everything in this country is reminiscent of the heritage of the Viking culture. When I left Oslo, I had no idea that this long hike would open the doors to an exciting adventure.
