Jazz improvisation and reharmonization is all about storytelling. Just as writers, film makers and graphic novelists tell their story with elements to draw the audience in, then wow them and finally bring them back home, jazz musicians do the same. In this book, Dr. Mattar starts off with a conceptual framework for storytelling. He also provides the reader with strategies for putting reharmonization and improvisation into practice through various techniques that range from the basic (such as seventh chords) to the esoteric (such as intervallic and negative harmony). He also provides many unique visuals to help the reader visualize how musical principles can be put into practice. Additionally, he provides six etudes to demonstrate the techniques explained in the book. Jazz has a story. Jazz tells a story. With every reharmonization, jazzers are changing the context of the story. With every improvisation, jazzers are plotting a new story arc for the main character(s).
