(Up-dated March 2026) Sam Cooke & Otis Redding are widely recognised as two of the greatest soul voices of all-time. Both have been called the ‘King of Soul’ and, sadly, both died young under tragic circumstances.
Sam Cooke composed most of his hits himself, including Wonderful World, Chain Gang, Cupid and Twistin’ The Night Away. He was inducted as a charter member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, and was honoured with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999.
Otis Redding is best known for (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay, which became the first posthumous single to go no.1 in the United States, and won Otis two posthumous Grammy Awards. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, and was honoured with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award ten years later.
