Inhaltsangabe

Edward Bowen is the minister of Salem, a chapel and focal point of the life of Pontselwyn, a local community in nineteenth-century Wales. It is a time of social injustice and unrest, but Bowen is resistant to pleas to intervene in the campaign for better working conditions at one of the area's slate quarries. Instead, he convinces himself he is called to emigrate to the United States, as others have already done, to continue his work as a minister of religion there. The truth is that he seeks escape from the cries of conscience, and it takes the violent death of Evan Phillips, a young lad growing up in Nevada, for him to understand he has been leading a life stained by platitudes and hypocrisy. Determined to redeem himself by avenging young Evan's death, Bowen realises he must adjust to the rough-and-tumble, lawless outlook of the gangs roaming the wild and harsh terrain of Nevada. Will he succeed in shaking off his past shortcomings and achieve what he believes he must now do?
