Julian Canning is a useless pilot and a disastrous soldier. He is therefore thoroughly unhappy about finding himself in the Royal Flying Corps and having to fly the ridiculously out of date BE2 observation aircraft.

April 1917 once again sees a crew of old men cheerfully seeking to bury a generation in the fields of France. The RFC throw large numbers of men and machines into supporting the Arras offensive regardless of the cost. The month will ultimately become known as ‘Bloody April.’

Strapped daily into an under powered box kite, Canning maintains a state of perpetual foul-mouthed inebriation as he navigates brothels and battlefields with equal ineptitude, all the while desperately trying to avoid becoming another trophy on the Red Baron’s wall.
