Litchfield is a small, rural town in south central Minnesota. Although, like most small towns, it offered many of its native sons to the armed services during World War II and the Korean Conflict, not many of those men chose to remain in the military and make it their career. Colonel Merle A. Hanson is one of those few.Now long retired from active duty, Colonel Hanson tells stories ranging from playing cowboys with the neighborhood kids in Litchfield, to enduring the horrors of battle in Vietnam, to the memorable people he met during his assignments in Germany. With self-deprecating modesty, his essays reveal his pride in his hometown, his gratitude to his devout parents and older brothers, and his undying love for the wife and children who supported him throughout his Army career.
