“And he served time as a prisoner of war” are words I will never forget hearing from the Vicar after the passing of my Step Grandfather, Bob White, on my Mother's side. Something he never spoke about; it was news to most of the family. I found out he wrote an account of his capture and subsequent captivity during World War 2 between 1942 - 1945. After reading Bob's account a few years passed, but his harrowing journey stuck inside my head and I've often looked back at it, re read it. I am still amazed how he survived the difficult time he went through. So the idea came to me that his story shouldn't be left to dissolve away in time but instead should be brought to life. This book is a combination of Bob's account and my own observations almost 80 years after those events, including pictures from the various locations. I researched the places he mentioned to find out their location that held him for so long, and with help from the National Records Office and British Army Museum and a few website forums I managed to locate the exact positions and was ready to explore. So I travelled across Italy, through Austria and Germany to see for myself the sites he was held at before they too are lost forever as time rolls forward.Along the way, I stopped off at other places of relevance that he wasn't taken to, a couple of concentration camps, Eagle's Nest and have also included those here. Whilst writing this book I was very fortunate that a friend, Chris Barrass, introduced me to his father, Pat Barrass, who was involved in the D-Day landings so I've also included his story, the beaches and my discoveries in Normandy. The first part of this book covers Egypt through to North Libya. in .At the time of my trip and writing this, it is not advised to travel to North Africa. So the account through to Italy is Bobs journey, written by Bob.
