Fitzwilliam Darcy has been researching the ship MERCHANT ROYAL since his history professor mentioned it during his second year at Cambridge. Charles Bingley has been helping his closest friend track down information about the lost vessel. Elizabeth and Jane Bennet are the great-great-granddaughters of the captain of the MERCHANT ROYAL. Mr. Thomas Bennet has his great-grandfather’s journal, as the captain survived the sinking of the ship. Having studied the tome since she learned to read, Lizzy mapped out where she believes the downed vessel is located. Darcy has done the same using his years of research. Darcy objects to having females join their expedition. Bennet will only allow the journal to leave his home if both his daughters go on the journey. The MERCHANT ROYAL may still have the lost Spanish treasure sent to pay their soldiers in 1641 stationed abroad. The issues begin when Darcy’s study is ransacked in an attempt to get his research. The invasion happens soon after Bingley publicly announces that he has discovered the captain’s journal; someone else is looking for the ship. Other issues occur that could be threats to the ladies. Jane’s reticle gets snatched in Liverpool. Then a doll is taken from Jane’s luggage, decapitated, and left on Lizzy’s bed. Darcy and Bingley complete a comprehensive search of the ship. No strangers are on board. Is one of the crew members attempting to sabotage their expedition? Did someone sneak on board and then leave? Is Lizzy safe, and was this a threat against her life specifically? The search for the lost ship becomes interspersed with other issues, such as Fanny Bennet’s behavior towards her stepdaughter. Collins is the heir to Longbourn, and Thomas Bennet is very ill. Will Collins become the guardian of Lizzy; she has not yet reached her majority? What about other family members who could claim to be the guardian of the young lady? Will they accept Lizzy going on a ship with two bachelors?
