A brand new version of this classic adventure, available for the first time for readers who might find the original Scots language version too challenging. The Raiders was first published by S.R. Crockett in 1894 and is generally regarded as one of the finest of his extensive body of work. It is a tale of piracy, smuggling, cattle rustling, mystery, kidnapping, and pursuit in 18th century Scotland. Its characters are richly drawn and there is much humour, and with May Maxwell, we have a heroine the equal of any produced by R.L. Stevenson. The action takes us from the shores of the Solway, which at that time was a gateway for smuggling, to the wild moors and mountains of Galloway, which was settled only by rogues and outlaws. It is clearly an area that Crockett loved, and he cites many placenames and features, most of which can be identified today, and which dominate the action. The central characters meet a number of others, each with their own stories, and there are moments of real tension, as well as some lighter conversations. However, most of the dialogue is written in the Scots language, which makes it a difficult read even for Scots, and it is almost impenetrable to non-Scots. So, in an effort to make this excellent tale more accessible to a wider readership, I have produced this version solely in English. Some minor changes to the narrative have also been made to provide a more fluent read for modern readers. In no way does this undermine current efforts to support the Scots language, which I applaud, and the original version is still in print. This version is all about the story, who wrote it and the place in which it is set. I also hope that this might also promote increased interest in the works of Crockett and any profits from this publication will be directed to organisations involved in that activity.
