Max Henderson, wealthy and respected owner of Portsmouth’s largest shipyard, seems to be cracking up. Drunk and dishevelled, Max is helped off a bridge by police officers in an apparent suicide attempt. And then, in what would seem an act of madness, Max takes personal possession of Jeanne d’Arc, a 42,500-ton decommissioned French aircraft carrier. Max’s employees are stunned, the UK government is incensed, the French don’t want anything to do with it and a series of events are put in motion which no one may be able to stop.
Compelling, insightful and hilarious… Here is a story steeped in the absurd and yet strangely familiar to anyone who has stood at the edge of human experience.
